HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL AND WELCOME NEW SUBSCRIBERS! There now 100 of you. Pretty cool for me. Thanks for the community.
Good morning! So far 2025 has been cold in Dallas. Really cold. And I need more fire making skills. I have fire starters for the fire place and store bought wood but the dang fire keeps fizzling down. Any tips?
I’m really in a place where I want to contemplate and have a vision for this year. I came up with a new idea below. Let me know if you’ve ever done this.
If you’ve alighted upon Little Yellow Bird for the first time, let me catch you up to the present state of things.
Once upon a time a baby was born out of wedlock but raised by her grandparents (for a short while until divorce and restructuring of the family brand), then raised by grandmother and step “father/grandfather”. She was always told who her bio-dad was but never had the taste or desire to meet him nor did the bio-dad reach out to her. Then she grew up and took a DNA test. A bomb dropped just this time last year with a sign that said “Dad alive. Not who you thought.” Then she met the new Dad. (You’re pretty much up to date now). And it’s been a rollercoaster of a year. What will 2025 bring? (Of course major important, loving and loved characters not mentioned above for time’s sake such as husband and mother. But all involved are in the cars alongside or just behind on the roller coaster. Some with hands way up. Some white-knuckling throughout. Oh, and the baby is a writer/performer who wrote a show about it.) Okay you’re caught up. You did get that the baby is me, right?
SEASONS OF 2025
Let’s talk a bit more about seasons which I’ve been contemplating this new year. I started the new year off on this topic right here.
DETERMINE YOUR CURRENT SEASON
What if before we decide the season we are headed for, we determine the current season we are living? Are you thriving in it? Are you meant to?
For instance, what if we break it down in general categories of life. (i.e. Finance, Friendships, Marriage, Career, Spirituality, Creativity, etc.)
Using Ecclesiastes as a jumping off point, it might look like this (because you can come up with your own “season”:
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.2
WRITE IT DOWN: (for example…)
Category/Season
Friendships/laugh and dance
Finance/build
Career/uproot
Spirituality/delight, joy
Marriage/mend, love
Creativity/speak
THEN:
You could see if there are similarities. Maybe you find yourself writing “uproot” a lot. Hmmm. Maybe there’s a lot of differences, your seasons are many-varied. But take a closer look, how are they connected? Even in the variety.
If we use this example above we have the following seasons: Laugh, dance, build, uproot, delight, joy, mend, love and speak.
Even by quick observance the only season sort of “sticking out” is uproot. All the others seem to play well together in the sandbox. Much like the translating of dreams, this is a very personal journey and exercise. But there seems to be a theme above.
Uproot does have its hand up. But look! There’s the word “build”. Sometimes we have to uproot the false foundations in order to build or re-build on solid rock so that we can laugh, dance, have joy, mend and speak out. I’m sure there are other ways of putting it all together and no doubt you would. It’s your season.
THE SUPER SEASON
In the Stanislavsky tradition of acting, there’s the “Super Objective”. Throughout working on a particular scene the character/actor seeks the immediate objective or “want”. “What do I want?” The actor using this method will be found asking this question in rehearsals. But then there’s the Super Objective. What does the character want overall? What’s the whole point? What’s making this character tick? What they must do to get to the Super Objective is a combination of all the weaved in desires along the way.
So this umbrella season you’re seeking is the Super Season (the Super Objective).
Looking at the seasons in which you find yourself, what clues do they give you as to the Super Season you are in or about to head into?
Don’t feel fenced in by the verse. You can’t box in the Holy Spirit or creativity. What comes up for you from those clues or what does it feel like?
Using our ongoing example from above, the Super Season could be something like LIVE OUT LOUD or MOVE or NOW.
What do you think? Are you going to do it? What words or phrases come up when you play with this?
Oh, I love making stuff like this up. It’s so much fun. And helpful to me. I hope to you as well. Using Ecclesiastes is a great way to begin. Keep going!
Happy New Year! My wife goes to an online school based out of Ft Worth, so it’s been a great place to visit. Great write. Thanks for your candor, people relate.
Oh dear, you're challenging me to stop sitting and thinking perpetually and start doing! Just when I've told myself I've reached the age where I can sit and be lazy. Peter knows this magic age this month and I'm following him in June 😆 So ok, I'll try your exercise starting now and think "Turn! Turn! Turn!" is a thoughtful place to start. Thanks and wishing you continued blessings in 2025 💝
