Communication through Dreams on Behalf of the Living (and the dying)
When I prophetically dreamed a musical journey for a friend and when Mom used music to tell me she loved me after she died. Journey with me through the songs.
Part Two! You can begin here with Home Concerts and Moving Past Awkward.
Communication through Dreams on Behalf of the Living (and the dying)
I was walking with a friend I’d known from our days teaching music to young children. We were in a vast, rather empty, parking lot. Grey, colorless. She wore a heavy long coat and as we walked, she untied the cloth belt of the coat and simply discarded it onto the ground as she kept moving forward, I asked her if she wanted the coat, making sure she knew she’d dropped it. “No,” she implied uncaringly. And kept moving forward.
Suddenly, from far in the distance behind us I saw, but mostly heard, an oversized, larger than life, steam engine playing music as only a dream can make. Varieties and assortments of tune. And instead of steam coming from the engine - there were colors! Streams of vivid colors flowing upward and outward.
The engine was coming in strong and fast. It filled me with awe; a sight to behold.
But What I Found Out Next…
Within days after this dream, this same friend called me. She revealed to me that she was about to go on what would become, essentially, a musical sojourn. I didn’t know it then, but her journey would be life changing for her. It would be a journey to heal grief and to commit to her love for making music.
If you read The Dreamer (or for that matter, LYB, or know me at all), this kind of happening isn’t that surprising to me, for this is the very nature of Spirit and of the communique that can appear in the dreamscape.
I didn’t know at the time what the dream meant, or if it was prophetic in any way (though in hindsight it did indicate signals of prophecy). I also, at the time, didn’t know that perhaps the dream was less about me, and more for her. And yet, for both of us. I’ve had instances before where I have been a conduit, as a gifted dreamer, for the sake of others. Though I have no power over who that ends up being, when, or why. I only confirm I’ve been given a real message after sharing the dreams (only when convicted to do so,) with the recipient, who confirms what I could not have known. That is to say, I tell them something that may seem strange to me, but is perfectly factual to them.
Yes, it’s wild and awe-inspiring.
I finally resolved that I was given this dream as a confirmation of the “yes” that was entering my friend’s next stage of life with her own “yes”.
Also, in hindsight, I see that based on the timing of the dream, I was about to shed a winter coat in my life as well. Dreams are so very layered.
My friend ended up having a two-year musical sojourn (as indicate by a musical steam engine, as opposed to, oh let’s say, a musical scooter) filled with new friends, new compositions and a revived loving sense of self.
So to have her show up in my home, to hear her musical train, after my own three year journey, it was the perfect end. What a delight! What an honor. The full circle.
Oh, isn’t it a wonderfully mysterious God we have, to go before us, to tell us what joy is on the horizon?
The Gift of Music in Dreams and The Liminal Spaces
In my last post entitled (obviously enough) A new series beginning soon, I spoke of how, when my grandmother was passing, I awoke morning after morning for weeks with a variety of inexplicable songs that I’d not heard in ages, but made perfect sense in light of Mom.1
These weren’t Jesus Songs. But they were from her via Him. I know because I know. Just like you would know about your mom or dad. You. Just. Know.
What I didn’t know was that these seemingly wackadoo song choices would hit home so deeply, not because I knew immediately that they were her vibe (the woman I knew when I was 8 or 9) but that when I scanned the lyrics, it lasered into my heart like a first class priority beam from heaven.
So now, I’m going to begin a new journey with you. I am going to take you on this wild musical “train” that Mom left for me as she communicated to me in that liminal space between sleeping and waking.
The Preamble
Before I tell you the first song, there was a preamble. A verse before the refrains started madly overflowing in. She began communicating the week she passed away. She was unconscious. But the morning before she passed, my brother and I ran into the store for coffee. (I remember getting an apple. Funny memory, I never ate it. Maybe I thought I should have an apple to keep up strength or something. We were existing on fumes.) As I walked down the aisle toward my brother at checkout, I suddenly became aware (strangely - because my mind wasn’t on the music in the store) of a song playing overhead… the refrain began to call out to me…
I think I'd better leave right now
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
Feelin' weaker and weaker
Somebody better show me how
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now2
I ran.
I knew. When we got to the Home that morning, we were gifted with her eyes open, gazing, looking to us, yet not with us. She’d been unconscious for 5 days. Had we arrived any later we would have missed it.
For my believing friends, I’d like to note that yes, this is God’s grace. I speak of Mom communicating to us, but I know it’s by God’s grace. God communicating, allowing the message to come through. Gracing us with the ability to receive it.
So journey with me on my new musical train in the liminal space of heavenly communique.
One rule. The songs are quite often out of context. It’s about the message within. Remember, God can and often does use anything to get your attention. He knows you better than anyone. Better than you know yourself.
Song #1 From Mom
Count on Me by Jefferson Starship
Why I know it was not something I heard on the radio the day before and why it was from her.
